Google Maps does much more than show a route. It can display live traffic, estimate travel time by car, bike, bus or on foot, and show opening hours of shops and clinics.
Routes through narrow lanes or newly built roads are not always accurate. When a route looks strange, trust road signs and local knowledge. Offline maps take up storage, so see our guide to freeing up space on Android if your phone is nearly full.
Location History can be turned off or auto-deleted in your Google account settings if you prefer not to keep a record of where you have been.
Maps is at its best when you trust it for the big picture and your eyes for the last 100 metres. It is excellent for routes, live traffic and opening hours, but new roads, narrow lanes and rural areas are not always accurate. Downloading an offline map before a trip is the single most useful habit, because signal drops exactly where you need it.
Before a family trip to a hill station, you download the offline map at home on Wi-Fi. When the signal disappears on the mountain road, navigation continues and you also saved mobile data for the day.
