The usual advice for changing phones is "just use the copy option". That works for photos and contacts, but it is the small, forgotten things that cause trouble: a login code that lived only on the old phone, a UPI app that refuses to open, a chat history that did not come across. Follow the order below and keep the old phone untouched until the end.
A copy can take an hour or more. Plug both phones in, and use home Wi-Fi so you do not burn through mobile data.
Open Settings → Google → Backup and run a backup now. Check that Google Photos shows your latest pictures as backed up. If storage is short, our guide on freeing up space will help.
During the first-time setup, the new phone offers to copy apps and data from another Android phone. Hold the phones close, follow the prompts and sign in to your Google account. Use a cable if the wireless copy is slow.
This is the step people forget. Banking and UPI apps check that your registered SIM is in the phone by sending an SMS. If you move the SIM at the end, you may have to register again. Insert the SIM in the new phone before you open any payment app.
Install WhatsApp, verify your number and restore from the backup. Then open Google Pay, PhonePe and your bank apps and re-verify as asked. Do a small test payment, such as one rupee to a family member, before you rely on the phone in a shop.
Use the new phone for two or three days. Open the apps you use most, look at your photos and contacts, and make sure each login works. Only then clean the old phone.
Will my app logins come across? Some will, but many banking apps ask you to log in again for safety.
Can I do this if the old phone is broken? If it was backed up to your Google account, yes. Without a backup, recovery depends on the damage, so get the old phone checked by a repair shop before you give up.
Before the move: charge both phones, back up, note down important logins, and check that your SIM and Google accounts work. During the move: use Wi-Fi, keep both phones side by side, and do not interrupt the copy. After the move: open a few photos and chats, test the camera, banking and payment apps, and only then reset the old phone.
If you cannot keep both phones, rely on a full cloud backup and give yourself extra time to check it. Back up your photos, contacts and chats, and note the apps you use. Do not reset your old phone until you have checked that the new one has everything you need.
