DigiLocker is a government-backed service where you can keep digital copies of important documents and share them when an organisation asks for proof. Documents issued directly by participating departments are shown as issued documents.
Protect the phone number linked to your account, set a screen lock and never share OTPs. Our article, What is DigiLocker and how do you use it?, walks through the sign-up process.
Which documents are accepted as valid proof depends on the organisation asking for them, so confirm with them if you are unsure.
DigiLocker saves you from carrying paper, but only if you set it up before you need it. Fetch the documents you use most, note which are issued by the department and which you uploaded, and keep your registered mobile number active because the OTP goes there. Whether an office accepts a digital copy depends on that office, so confirm when it matters.
A job applicant is asked for a marksheet at a short notice. Because the document was already fetched into the locker last month, it can be shared immediately, and the applicant still carries a paper copy as a back-up.
Read our DigiLocker guide for sign-up steps. For related services see UMANG, and protect your ID with Aadhaar safety tips.
Documents issued directly by a participating department are treated as issued documents, but acceptance is up to the organisation asking, so confirm with them.
Your locker is protected by your number and security PIN. Keep your SIM safe and set a screen lock; see our lost-phone guide.
