You buy a new phone, install your payment app, and suddenly it refuses to open your account. This is not a fault in most cases. UPI apps link your bank account to your phone and your SIM card as a security measure, and they need to check both again when something changes. Understanding the reason makes the process less stressful.
When you register, the app sends an SMS from your phone to confirm that the mobile number linked to your bank account is really in your possession. This "device binding" means that a criminal who only knows your number or account details cannot set up UPI on another phone. The downside is that when you change your phone or SIM, you need to repeat the process.
If a shop assistant offers to "set up" your payment app, be careful. Never hand over the phone while you enter a UPI PIN, and never share the PIN or OTP. Our guide on how UPI works explains why the PIN is never needed to receive money.
After you have confirmed that the new phone works, remove your bank account from the old UPI app or log out, and do a factory reset. For a complete process, follow our guide on moving to a new phone.
Can I use UPI without the registered SIM in the phone? The registration process needs it. After that, the app may still check it from time to time.
Will my payment history come across? Your history usually stays with your account in the app and may reappear after login. Check your bank statement for a full record.
When you install the payment app on the new phone, it sends a verification SMS from the phone with the SIM linked to your bank account. The bank checks that the SIM and the number match. After this, you set or reset your UPI PIN using your debit card details if needed. If this fails, nothing is wrong with your money; the app simply cannot verify the device yet.
The most common reasons are using a SIM slot that does not send SMS, a different number than the one registered in the bank, a lack of balance for the SMS, and a weak network. Make sure the right SIM is set for SMS in your phone settings.
After you move, remove the app and log out on the old phone, and check in your bank app that no old device remains linked. Keep your UPI PIN secret from anyone helping you set it up.
